Congratulations to our Year 4 Squash team – winners of the Roman Cup Tournament 2023!  Please read below a game by game review of the tournament and their success by Ted, Newsteam’s roving sports reporter,

The Under 9 Squash team performed brilliantly in the Roman Cup 2023 tournament at the Garrison.  The team of Mousie, Rosemary, Rory and Elliott dominated the competition and were winners of the Platinum group, receiving medals and a trophy and an individual award for Best Girl – won by Rosemary.

The team got off to a reasonably good start – winning 7 of their first 8 games. Next up – Layer 2. Rory and Elliott had some strong rallies – and there were great comebacks from Mousie. Rosemary continued her excellent winning streak – not losing in any of her 5 games. Rory battled hard – with some excellent long shots from the back of the court including one particularly great winner.  Mousie went 3-1 down, but emerged a 9-5 winner.

Moving on to our fourth match – Lawford 1 were tough opponents . We didn’t get off to a strong start, but then Elliott and Rosemary won by comfortable score lines of 9-4 and 9-5 which closed the gap at the top of  the group table to 2 points.

In the final four matches we really felt the pressure against Layer 1. CPHS had to win the final two matches comfortably to overtake Lawford and bring home the trophy. Mousie and Rosemary rose to the challenge both beating their opponents 9-2 resulting in victory!

Speaking afterwards Mousie said “I am happy for the result that we deserved.” Rory was keen to tell me “I feel happy we defended our title this year. I am also happy for my friend Rosemary who received an individual award.” Miss Banks added “I am really proud of how we played and of our sportsmanship towards referees and other players.”
