Academic excellence is hard-wired into everything we do at Colchester Prep & High School. Whether you are aiming for your children to sit the 11+ exam or apply for a scholarship for entry into our highly sought after Senior School, preparation starts right from EYFS. We equip your children with the tools, skills and confidence to achieve their full potential.

We are extremely proud of the number of our pupils that are successful in both the 11+ examination and also being offered scholarships into our Senior School. Our pastoral care team work closely with those children sitting assessments and preparing for interviews to ensure they remain happy and can successfully manage the pressures around exam times.

HOW WE PREPARE YOUR CHILD

PERSONALISED SUPPORT FOR EVERY CHILD

Our curriculum is designed to prepare your children for scholarships and the 11+ examination in a supportive, integrated and relaxed way that ensures all the tools and skills are in place well in advance of the required deadlines. Much of the learning is integrated seamlessly into main stream lessons. Open-ended differentiation within lessons gives all children the confidence and potential to extend and deepen their learning across the curriculum. Group work, presentations and collaborative tasks help build children’s confidence and analytical skills.

From Year 5 we introduce our Prep Aspire Higher Club and 11+ Booster Sessions, focusing the children more specifically on 11+ and scholarship preparation.

IN THE CLASSROOM

Our Prep children have a broad, enriching and immersive curriculum ensuring a strong and broad academic foundation.

Within English and Mathematics lessons there is a dedicated focus on mastery teaching, stretching and challenging the children to further deepen their knowledge and learning skills.

Problem solving and verbal reasoning tasks build deep learners and help develop methodical thinkers. ESB (English Speaking Board) is offered to allow children to build confidence and presentation skills.

YEAR 5 & 6 ASPIRE HIGHER CLUB

Our Prep Aspire Higher Club is offered to pupils from Year 5 and covers a range of topics and skills.

These include exam technique, speaking and listening, presentation skills, 11+ preparation (Y5 Aspire Higher Club only), and interview technique.

We also look at current affairs and invite guest speakers in to our club. The club does sometimes require a small amount of ‘home learning’ to supplement our activities.

YEAR 5 11+ BOOSTER SESSIONS

These sessions are offered from the Spring Term for Year 5 pupils who are registering for the 11+ examinations in the following September.

These sessions allow for dedicated time looking at past papers, mark schemes and examination technique specifically tailored for the 11+ examination.

This then culminates in a 11+ mock examination where the children sit a recent 11+ examination paper under exam conditions and receive tailored feedback for each individual.

SPECIALIST TEACHING AND ENRICHMENT

Pupils in our Prep School enjoy specialist teaching in Music, Languages, PE, Drama and Computer Science and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and accreditation opportunities.

Together with our Wellesley Character Development Programme, our curriculum encourages them to develop the talents and skills required to meet the criteria of our subject specific Year 7 Scholarships.

Colchester Prep & High School Scholarships

A WIDE VARIETY OF SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE

Colchester Prep & High School are pleased to offer a range of scholarships to prospective Year 6 and Year 7 pupils.

In Year 5, we offer a 3 Year Academic Scholarship to Year 6 pupils demonstrating outstanding achievement in English and Mathematics. Or you can apply in Year 6 for a(n) English, Mathematics, Science, Music & Performance, Digital & Creative Art, Technology. STEAM or Sport Scholarships for entry into Year 7 of our Senior School.
